My best friends have been to Ireland multiple times. A couple of months ago they SENT ME A TICKET because "this time you're coming with us." They knew it was a dream of mine and also that I could never afford to go; they insisted on bringing me with them and paid my entire way - I had to fight to do so much as buy them a drink.

It was a magical trip and I was overwhelmed and knew nothing I could do would thank them enough. But I've thought of something symbolic: the wife is partial to my embroidery. So I want to embroider a motto for them, in Irish. I wanted to get a native speaker to translate this for me while there but couldn't, so I hope someone here can help me:

The love of true friends outlives life itself

or outlasts if 'outlives' can't be translated comfortably. Or lives beyond if neither of those work. Do let me know which it is if you reply Smile

Is buaine grá fíorcharad/carad dílse ná beatha might be one way.
(true friends/beloved friends)
'Is buaine' = more enduring, longer-lasting
('an bheatha [féin]) is also possible. I've left out the definite article deliberately)

Hmm, saol might be more appropriate than beatha. That's what I had first, then changed it. Wait for other versions.

EDIT: na bhfíorcharad/na gcarad dílse instead of fíorcharad/carad dílse might be slightly better - or just the same.

Hey, anybody else, PLEEEEASE? pretty please with sugar on top? I'm really interested in having this be grammatically and culturally right, out of respect to the language and the people I met in Ireland. Can I please get some more opinions?

Now to sort through the innumerable fonts I downloaded for this project and begin making my template, LOL. Thank god for computers.

If I were anywhere near a class of any kind I'd enroll in it, any kind of Gaelic, Welsh, etc is really hard to learn in Florida. It's wonderful that you folks have this forum. I hope and trust you have a lot of fun doing this!
