Just some curiosity...
You mentioned that you were learning (or did learn?) Latin. Besides Irish, what other languages do you speak? |
None really. I can read Latin, some German, some Gaelic and a smattering of other languages, but I can't actually hold a reasonable conversation in anything but English or Irish. _________________ Fáilte roimh cheartúcháin. / I'm still a learner!

Well, most adult Americans speak more Spanish than Irish people speak Irish. (Gaeltacht excepted) _________________

Yep...especially in California, the Southwest, and Florida, where a large part of the population has Spanish as their first language. We gringos have to pick up at least some Spanish, or we're stuck! In California, it's difficult to get a job in public service or in most offices if you're not bilingual.
Most American high schools require a foreign language, but when you never have a chance to travel to where that language is spoken, you tend to lose it pretty quickly. I had three years of French in high school and two in college, and was at the point where I was reading novels and could hold a reasonable conversation...but all that was 30+ years ago, and I would be in big trouble if I were in a situation where I HAD to speak it.

It's amazing where you've come in 3 years! It's hard to believe all that came from 3 years! Although, in class, speaking with others, I suppose you'd get more. Advice from one who took 4 years of French and 3 years of Spanish--and speaks neither 33 years later: Always find somebody to talk to. Keep wearing that nametag. Thanks for the interview.
BTW, since you have hymns laying around.....if you had any in Irish.....would you consider sharing? _________________ Please wait for confirmation or correction on anything I translate. I am a rank beginner. |
