Hello, I belong to an Irish lodge and would like to have the following translated for a possible tattoo.
"We meet upon the Level and we part upon the Square"

Cruinnímid ar an leibhéal agus scaraimid ar an cearnóg.
I suspect there is a pun involved in the original statement, though. Normally puns don't translate, but in this case it might, depending on what you mean. "leibhéal" can be a level place, but I think it can also be a carpenter's level. However, I don't think "ar an leibhéal" can mean "on the level" as in "honest". "cearnóg" can mean mean a square as in town square, or a square in the geometric sense, so I suspect it can also mean t-square. But I don't think "ar an cearnóg" can mean "on the square" as in "dealing fairly with each other".
So if this is a lodge for engineers or carpenters, the intended pun might translate. On the other hand, if you're trying to say that you're a group of honest folks, I don't think the pun works.
Can you clarify what the statement is supposed to mean?

Both the square and level are masonic symbols. It's really hard to explain but here is a link to a poem that might make a translation easier.

Thanks Laurie,
I was not feeling ignored, The few times I have asked for help, I have always had a fast response. I think that this site is amazing and have even found words to teach my 7 year old daughter for her class project on Ireland.
This is a truely great group of friends on here.

I can't think of a way to capture the dual meanings of "level" and "square", but perhaps someone else will.

Yes, you are correct the phraise "We meet upon the Level and we part upon the Square" has been translated. mhwombat asked for more information and I have tried to make it a little more clear. Since this is for a tattoo I want to make sure that it is correct.
