I need to have Red Dog's Translated into Gaelic. I think I have the words, but am not sure if it is correct. I was not sure of the different versions of Dog and when I should use one over the other.

Is it Dearg madra? And how do I make it possessive?

Thanks,

Erin

Red dogs (i.e. plural) would be Madraí dearga (or maybe madraí rua gruebel)

For the possesive (like 'the red dog's bone' or something) it would be
(Cnámh) an mhadra dheirg
(bone) of the red dog
(I think!) Wink

First off, possessives generally don't float off by themselves. Red Dog's what?

Is "Red Dog" a proper name? I.e., is it referring to a specific person, place, or thing known as "Red Dog" or does it refer simply to a dog that happens to be red?

Descriptors in Irish come after the thing they describe. So,

Red Dog's X (assuming that Red Dog is a proper name) would be

X an Mhadra Rua

I think it would depend on what belongs to Red Dog. For instance,
Thomas- Tomás
Teach- House
Thomas' house- Teach Thomáis
Whereas...
Red Dog's bed, I believe would be Leapa mhadra dhearg.

See what I mean??

I'm sure the possesive sign is an error

Madraí Rua

is what is needed

Often here we see

Mushroom's for sale

You mean, like, an Irish Setter? I thought they wanted Red Dog's as in belonging to Red Dog. Confused

So did I. And she did ask for how to make it possessive.

Right. I do agree with Rua for an Irish Setter, though. I just thought they wanted a Red Dog, like the one on the beer can!! lach

Madra Rua always meant Fox to me. I know there is the word sionnach as well but as I was growing up madra rua was always fox. Although you are all right in saying that Rua means red as well as dearg. Just wondering if anyone else came across this term as well???? (Or am I going completely insane!!! gruebel
