I bought a new fountain pen off of eBay, and it writes like... nothing. I mean, it's so effortless to write with that I'm hardly aware of the pen in my hand.

So when I went to leave feedback for the transaction, I wrote "My new pen is wonderful!" and submitted the form. eBay rejected it, saying that my submission contained disallowed words. Huh?! Oh, come on... you can't be serious... So I rewrote it to avoid having the word "is" immediately after "pen", and eBay accepted it.

Which made me wonder... what if someone else, also delighted with their purchase, wanted to write "My new penis enlarger is wonderful!" Guess that wouldn't be allowed either.

:lach:

Next time you'll have to write "Tá mo pheann nua go hiontach" and see what eBay thinks about that!

It's a "Waterman Expert", with a fine nib. There's a user on eBay called lewertoski in France who has a good reputation (not just on eBay, but also on a fountain pen forum I've been visiting now and then*), so I bought from him. IIRC, Waterman used to be an American company that opened a factory in France, but eventually the American branch went out of business. Fountain pens are generally much more expensive in Europe!

* and inflicting Irish on them!

I got started on this whole fountain pen thing in the last month or so. I'm always looking for the perfect pen, one that is comfortable and gives me a perfectly solid line. I cannot stand it if there's any "stripiness" when I write. If the pen skips, even for a nanometer, I have to go back over the line to fill it in.

I think this started when I was studying quantum mechanics, and had to write ψ*ψ a lot. And I mean a lot. And because I've written a few zillion of them, my ψ's are tall and skinny, and I make them with quick strokes. To this day, I test pens by writing ψ*ψ ψ*ψ ψ*ψ ... I have never been able to get a perfectly solid ψ*ψ every time with a ball point pen, or even the gel pens (although a Mitsubishi/Uniball "eye" comes pretty close). A felt tip can handle it, but they wear out so quickly, or dry up.

Living in rural Tír na Wombait, the nearest stores that sell decent gel pens are about an hour away... and they never seem to have the same brands twice. So about a month ago I was planning on ordering a box of my favourite gel pens, wondering if there were any that I haven't tried yet, and bemoaning the fact that gel pens run out of ink so quickly. I started searching on the web for the perfect pen, and stumbled onto a fountain pen forum. Hmm... I hadn't tried a fountain pen since I was a kid. Maybe I should give it a go. Bought an inexpensive Lamy, and discovered that fountain pens can give you a perfect ψ*ψ every time!

Tsk tsk! Potty mouth! eBay doesn't want you to talk like that.

I can understand them not allowing "penis", but rejecting "pen is" is a bit OTT!

My guess is they've been getting a lot of spam for...er...male enhancement products. I've noticed that spam emails now often insert a space or an asterisk in certain keywords to help them get around filters. eBay's probably on to that practice and telling its filters to reject such things as "p enis," "pe nis," "pen is" and "peni s."

The ironic thing is that after this happened, I did a search, and discovered that there are tons of... er... male enhancement products for sale on eBay. So the people who buy that stuff must have to do a bit of circumlocution when they write feedback.

It's just a badly designed filter, with humorous consequences. Image

You must do a huge amount of writing Wombat.

The most expensive ones on that site are like €500 or more !
I could buy a washing machine and dryer on that.
