I got started on this whole fountain pen thing in the last month or so. I'm always looking for the perfect pen, one that is comfortable and gives me a perfectly solid line. I cannot stand it if there's any "stripiness" when I write. If the pen skips, even for a nanometer, I have to go back over the line to fill it in.
I think this started when I was studying quantum mechanics, and had to write ψ*ψ a lot. And I mean a lot. And because I've written a few zillion of them, my ψ's are tall and skinny, and I make them with quick strokes. To this day, I test pens by writing ψ*ψ ψ*ψ ψ*ψ ... I have never been able to get a perfectly solid ψ*ψ every time with a ball point pen, or even the gel pens (although a Mitsubishi/Uniball "eye" comes pretty close). A felt tip can handle it, but they wear out so quickly, or dry up.
Living in rural Tír na Wombait, the nearest stores that sell decent gel pens are about an hour away... and they never seem to have the same brands twice. So about a month ago I was planning on ordering a box of my favourite gel pens, wondering if there were any that I haven't tried yet, and bemoaning the fact that gel pens run out of ink so quickly. I started searching on the web for the perfect pen, and stumbled onto a fountain pen forum. Hmm... I hadn't tried a fountain pen since I was a kid. Maybe I should give it a go. Bought an inexpensive Lamy, and discovered that fountain pens can give you a perfect ψ*ψ every time!
