kenailan, I think you missed a bit there. Ábhar on its own is "a reason". "Reproach" is ábhar náire "reason for shame". Gan eagla agus gan náire "Without fear and without shame." Another word for "reproach, disgrace" is aithis: Gan eagla agus gan aithis "Without fear and without disgrace." Don't be embarrassed, we all have to start somewhere and everyone makes mistakes. Hopefully we can all learn from them. I did a similar thing myself here = http://www.irishgaelictranslator.com/tr ... 94801.html, missing the article "an" on duine that gave it a particular meaning. I don't have enough confidence to say if Ní pléisiúr gan phian is correct or not. It looks like it might say "It's not a pleasure without (some) pain" which might shift the emphasis a little to a masochistic meaning rather than a warning like "no pain, no gain." On the other hand, it might say exactly what was intended. Hopefully someone more advanced can help is with that... Don't make another thread on the same subject ! Keep asking questions, or ask for confirmation here. If this thread goes off the first page before you are satisfied bump it to the top again by posting to it. With my translations always (without exception) wait for others to confirm or correct.

Alright. Thank you. Is there anything closer to reproach than what has already been listed? Is "pain" phian or pian? And is Ní pléisiúr gan phian more of a masochistic saying? I'm looking for something like "no success without work" |

In Irish, words often change their spelling slightly according to how they are used in a sentence. In this case, it's gan phian, with the h.
