"Connor" most definitely does NOT mean "strong desire." The root is a word for "hound," and the meaning generally offered for the name is "lover of hounds."

Another origin is the Irish 'Coachuhhar' which means high desire.
Also from the Irish 'Coachuhhar', meaning high desire. Also from Irish 'Coachuhhar', High Desire. Three different websites mention the above as an alternative etymology for the name. Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid

You have to take name websites with a very big handful of salt. Redwolf ...agus déanfaidh mé do mholadh ar an gcruit a Dhia, a Dhia liom! Salm 43:4

It's pretty well established, for one. Redwolf ...agus déanfaidh mé do mholadh ar an gcruit a Dhia, a Dhia liom! Salm 43:4

GOOGLE ALERT I am extremely sceptical about many of those websites offering information about names. There are just too many examples (I can't be bothered to source them now) of completely incorrect information. I think that what is happening on the web is that gross errors are being copied from site to site thus multiplying hugely incorrect information turning up from a Google search. Maybe there is some solid backing for this etymology of Connor. But the fact that all the quotes give the very weird spelling 'Coachuhhar' I remain to be convinced. Redwolf's explanation is the one usually given by reliable sources. Warning: Reasonable command of Irish - but I still make basic errors.

Of course I use google as a search engine. The sites aren't related to google though. What search engine do you use... ![]() Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid

What he means is that you have to use discretion with anything kicked up by a search engine. Search engines return results indiscriminately...you have to do your own research and use your own judgement to determine if those results are reliable. We deal with names a lot around here, and it doesn't take long to determine which sites offer reasonably good information and which are suspect.
