I have an old chair with a leather back impressed with what I think is :
"na bean d'on chat gun lamnain". Its difficult to make out the letters and accents so I hope thats close enough to be able to make sense of.

Na bean d'on chat gún lámhainn. The woman of the cat ???dress??? glove. wait for other input, but that's the gist of it. Ní bheidh Éire shaor ar síocháin choíche, agus gan an ceart, ní féidir an tsíocháin a bheith ann.

I think it's some wacky proverb - I've seen something before...but I need some time to remember where I read it

One of the Scottish clans (I can't remember which one) has as it's motto "Don't touch the cat but a'glove!"

Yep it's Scottish and means
"Touch not the cat but a glove" the Irish version of it is Na cur lámh ar cat ar laimhin |

LOL! That's wierd, all those Scottish words were in the Irish dictionary!
