Can anybody please help me with learning Irish Gaelic? I know nothing at all, but want to learn as much of possible, correctly, as possible. My heritage is important to me, and living in Arizona, USA, it is hard finding any people that speak it fluently. I would like to either be able to have help from any of you throug AIM, or get help finding cheap ways to learn it. Please instant message me, pur3p3r50n on AIM if you don't mind.
I am a learner. Wait for further input.

Do you live anywhere near Phoenix? If so, this may be of interest:

Thanks, but that is a whole school (expensive :-\) and it is mostly based on the arts, not the language, from what I saw...

The Teach Me irish software offered on this site is very cheap considering what you get for it.... and its good for vocab, pronunciation, and grammar. I'd say check that out or the book/tape combo called Learning Irish by Michael O' Siadhaill

It's not a school, it's a cultural center. You pay by the class, and I doubt it's very expensive at all. We have a community cultural center here (not Irish, unfortunately) that offers all kinds of classes, and they're generally very reasonable. You could at least call them and ask. And they do have Irish and Welsh language classes...follow some of the links there and you'll see.

There's a real advantage to having a teacher when you're learning a language...it's not always absolutely essential, but you will generally learn faster and grasp pronunciation more quickly. It's worth enquiring about, any way.

Here...this page at the site gives you more info. You'll want to close the pop-up and scroll down a bit, and you'll see info on their introductory conversational Irish classes, which meet at 7:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

The cost is $100 per semester, which is a bargain compared to a lot of classes (heck, I pay more than that per semester for my daughter to study piano!). If you don't have the $$$ now, it might be something to consider for the future.

In the meantime, I've just started the "TeachMe" package as well, and I'm really impressed with it (even if I do get the impression that the computerized teacher is getting a bit impatient with me! It's hard to learn a new language at 42, let me tell you!).

See, now all you have to do is persuade family members that language packages and classes make great birthday presents! (and Christmas presents, and whatever presents). :D
