hey hey,

This isn't exaclty translation stuff but it is stuff I would like to know and you guys could probably help.

1.Are there any good christian or catholic groups that make biblical music in irish?

2.I was told by a relative of mine that my Irish ancestors were kicked out for well, helping to start the IRA. After I calmed down I decided to find out whether or not this is true. My names on that side of the family are Docherty and Doran. If someone could confirm that it'd be great. If not I guess I'll have to find out why I keep getting cavity searches whenever I get on a plane.

3.What are some great books to read up on St Patrick and on Irish mythology? I have a copy of the mabinogion (Ok, lots of it is welsh, some of it is irish) but I would like something more.

4.Is there any chance of me getting a translation of songs that my church has written and any hope that they will fit the same tunes?

Josh.

There are 10 different kinds of people in the world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

If u want to find out more about St.Patrick go to www.saintpatrickcentre.com

It's a new museum opened up in my home town of Downpatrick, Co.Down. It's all interactive and stuff and a class movie shown at the end in a large auditorium! Anyhoo, St.Patrick is supposed to be buired up at the Cathedral in the town. The website has cool info and links and stuff about St.Patrick but if you want the full picture u should come over and see it.

Enjoy

I think the lad meant County Down, Séamas? How's the water today in the shower? Cause it's cooooolllld outside *shiver*

I'd be mighty careful with ANY IRA info you get on the net (same as in Germany trying to search Black Skulls or RAF) I'd also be very careful where you mention it. If you think you're on some blacklist, the only thing to do is go with a few family documents to your local Irish Embassy to straighten it out. It's kind of like running into the lion's den, but it's the only way to do it right. I can imagine if you make an honest impression that you want only help, they will meet you half way on it.

As for the music, I don't know, but there must be some kind of Christian music scene that pulls from Irish. If not I think we better call Tadhg and tell him we found the "Marktlücke" he's been waiting for.

Pól had some good links about St. Patrick if memory serves. And a lot of the folks have extensive libraries having to do with all things Irish...unfortunately I'm not one of them. All I can tell ye is where to get a spiffy multimedia Bible CD which includes the Letters of Saint Patrick: www.fiosfeasa.com

Post yer songtexts here and we'll take our best shot at them. Rhyming with the old text is rather out of the question, but keeping it poetic or retaining some of the cadencing is quite possible.

peace

I think we may be able to keep the songs going with rhyme also, so long as we allow ourselves a little poetic license: bearing in mind to keep the spirit of the songs.
Sounds like a bit of fun, and good mental exercise.

I do know of a couple of Christian groups that sing/play Irish music, but I don't know of any, off the top of my gourd, that sing IN Irish (I'm sure they're out there, but whether or not they've done any recording is another story). No doubt the parts of the Mass are available in Irish...possibly even in uniquely Irish settings. You might want to do a Yahoo or Google on "Celtic Christianity"...there are Celtic (monastic) Catholic organizations out there that might be able to help with some more traditional stuff.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for good Christian/Irish music in any language, I have to recommend my neighbors, Isle of Light:
