sorry bout the long wind, but I felt we owed you at least a substantiation as to why we're sticking behind Oisín's translation.

Asking Daltaí to confirm something from this site is a bit much

GRMA for posting that screen shot, Méabh, I spent the past few hours trying to find a translation online that I could back with a reference to post in Oisin's defense.

It broke my heart that "sawpony" felt near tears because of someone's lack of tact and I wanted to reassure her.

This was something special for her and we all know that Oisin took the translation directly from the Irish Bible --- something that, with a biblical reference, could easily be researched. My heavens it was he who mentioned the verse to begin with !!

Sawpony, I wish you much luck and happiness as you step into your new life in a couple of weeks. Stay peaceful inside knowing that --- if you used the direct translation from here exactly as written --- your promise to your husband will be from your heart. Oisin has a kind heart and would never take something such as this lightly, sugar.

We like to have fun here, making the place have a friendly feel to it, and we banter a bit throughout the forum --- BUT translations are not taken lightly. That is witnessed in the way everyone pitches in to help in various ways ... be it by way of 'spellcheck' or posting an idea that may flow just a wee bit differently off the pallet.

Oisin - please forgive me. If there was a way to delete the posts, I would delete my first post in this thread. My smartass fiance was the one who sent me an "anonymous" post telling me the quote was not what I believed it to be. I am so damn embarassed and incredibly pissed at him. But I wanted to post my public apology.

I saw your posts. I hope you didn't choose "Pé áit a dtéann tusa, bímse leat." I too am from Dun Laughaire..

It does not mean what they said it means. "Pé áit a dtéann tusa, bímse leat" actually translates directly to " I follow behind the large donkey penis." In SOME towns, it gets closer to what you want to say, but whatever dialect, it ALWAYS refers to donkey genitalia.

I hope you didnt choose that phrasing. Someone was messing with you.

Instead, all I saw was red But I wanted you to see why I reacted so strongly. I was infuriated that someone would have such a joke with me. So I attacked and once again, I am very sorry.
