Hey Cait

the "dashes" are called "fadas"

From Aisling's fonts thread

How to get FADAS in your emails/word docs etc.

For Windows users: To change your keyboard to accept the Irish fonts go to Control Panel, click on 'Date, Time, Language and Region Options', click Add Other Languages, click Details, click Add and then select IRISH. Once you do this you should be able to use the fadas by clicking the 'Alt' key and the vowel ex: Alt + o = ó

You also have the capability to toggle between Irish and other languages you've selected on your keyboard. Click on Lanuage Bar and there you can select to have a 'language bar' shown on your desk top to make toggling easier.

Note: I just discovered this quirk on my Windows XP version. The key strokes Alt + letter works for i, o and e but for a and u I have to hit Alt + ' then hit the letter. Sheesh, that's wierd and maybe it's a quirk of my keyboard but if just hitting the Alt +the letter doesn't work for you, try the above sequence.

the "no fail but more work" way is this one:
press and hold the alt key and type the 4 digit code

alt + 0225 = á
alt + 0233 = é
alt + 0237 = í
alt + 0243 = ó
alt + 0250 = ú

With my version of XP if you press the apostrophe key once nothing happens

If you press it twice you get ''

So I just press it once

then immediately after that- I press the vowel and a fada appears on it!

I have my keyboard set to "US International", as I use more than just Irish for accents. For fadas all I do is hit the apostrophe (') key before a vowel and tádá! It's über-handy as I can also use umlauts, and the the grave accent (à), which somes in handy for all of that French that I don't speak. There are a number of other things US International allows. That's my reccomendation.... as you can also use "alt + vowel" for the fadas, as you could in Irish.
