Is http://matrix.netsoc.tcd.ie/~hcksplat/g ... ocloir.htm not a reliable dictionary? Somebody says it is one of the most reliable, I guess they were wrong??

When I look up "fire" at that link, I get "tine" and "diten" (for some reason, the script is replacing some of the letters with hooks). It's supposed to be "dóiteán." That site seems to have a lot of trouble with vowels dropping out and getting replaced by question marks...not sure why.
Actually, looking at it again, it's the vowels with fadas that are getting dropped. Something's wrong with whatever font they're using.
When you can, you may want to invest in a good print dictionary. I'm not real happy with the one I have (I've found some odd inconsistencies in it) but at least you won't have to worry about font errors.

Try clicking <<View|Source>> on your toolbar. Then search for "fire". You should be able to see all the letters then. It is dóiteán.

A dictionary that's in print would be more reliable
