Hi
I'm naming a star for my boyfriend Kieran. He says his name means "little dark one" or "dark prince" and I would like to name the star one of those in Irish Gaelic as he's very proud of his Irish heritage. So any help would be great translating either or both of those :)

Thanks

According to Woulfe's Irish Names for Children, the Irish name Ciarán is in fact a diminutive of the word ciar, which means "dark", so the name itself means "little dark [one]".
I'm still a learner, so be sure to get input from others, especially for tattoos.

That really isn't what the name means, you know. The diminutive suffix is like the "-y" suffix in English. So someone may have been named "Ciar" and his son might have been "Ciarán." It's like "James" and "Jimmy" or "John" and "Johnny." "Ciar" is a name that has a root in a word for "dark," but to say that "Ciarán" means "little dark one" is like saying that "Johnny" means "little blessing of God." In short, it's bogus. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with "prince"...dark or not.

i would be carefull with this translation if i were you. quite apart from redwolf's point, references to the dark one, or suchlike in irish, usually mean the devil.

but i have a question or two about this starnaming thing, if you don't mind.

how does it work?
is this name entered into an accepted astronomical database?
and how are these people accredited to appoint a star a name?
and what happens if two people want to call a star the same name, does it become jimmystar 1, 2, etc.?
