Hmmm, I've never come across ciúl as an old word for anything in either OI or SG. The old word for hazel in OI, SG and Welsh was coll.
None of the words for knowledge, understanding or recognize are anywhere close to ciúl. Although, I found it interesting that the SG word aithne can be used for knowledge, and its IE root word is gnō which is very close to cnó for nut. Wonder if there's a connection... I'm a learner so please wait for confirmation on anything I translate! |

As Redwolf said that's corner - in Modern and Old Irish, and SG as well. Actually, Modern Irish is cúil, OI was cuil. SG is cùil. There was a distinction made in OI for recess which was cúl. In SG cùl survives with the meaning of back just as in Irish cúl. I'm a learner so please wait for confirmation on anything I translate! |
