my wonderful Irish friend calls me something that sounds (in English) like "crater" and he says it means "something precious." Can you tell me and spell in Gaelic what it is he is saying? Thanks.

créatúr = "crater"
This word actually means "creature", but is used as a term of affection especially when the person is upset or something bad has happed to them.

Thank you so much for your response to my inquiry about my dearest friend calling me "creature." I have a better understanding now of its meaning and appreciate that you took the time to clarify its meaning.
With kind regards,
Nell
