I am trying to come up with a tattoo design and originally I wanted it to say something like "one step at a time" or "one foot at a time". I was given the advice that "step by step" in gaelic is "céim ar chéim". Would it be grammatically incorrect if I wanted to have a circle reading: "céim ar céim" over and over again to create the circular design?
I want to thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

A nice variation would be the words circling a celtic cross knot like this one
with céim at the west, chéim at the east , and ar north and south ?

So I do have to use "céim ar chéim" and can't use "céim ar céim"? Is the second grammatically incorrect?

You need to use Céim ar CHéim for it to be correct grammatically.
Céim is feminine and is aspirated by AR.

céim ar céim is really incorrect
Note: if your translation is for a tattoo, wait at least for 3 confirmations. Deir Erik: Foghlaimígí gaeilge! Erik ütleb: Õppige iiri keelt! My irish is imperfect! My translations are seldom correct. Tá m'aistriúcháin ceart go hannamh.
