I was shortly sharing a student appartement with a girl from somewhere in Lancashire (is there a small town with 'Gate' in the name?) she had friends from Wigan..well whatever. Living with her showed me just how different the two languages are...some examples:

She asked if she could help herself to a rubber from my desk
I asked her if she's got a date tonight

She wanted her dressing gown
I had no idea she meant her bathrobe

She came in from a party all tousled up and told me she was pissed
I asked 'at whom?'

The best was as I called someone a stupid twit on the telephone
She told me 'you're finally learning'
