I have found that the song"when irish eyes are smiling" was written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff Jr. Chauncey's mother came to north america when she was 8 years old, first arriving in Montreal Quebec, Canada and later moving to New York, Chauncey was born in Buffalo New York in 1860 but I havent been able to find any info on Graff yet.
Im sure someone else will be able to add to this though. Phelan

It was in a movie, wasn't it? It's not particularly prominent or popular in Ireland but I must say I like the melody.
I think the sentiment in it is a bit too saccharine for it to have been written by a first generation Irishman. "Tá an saol mór lán den fhilíocht ag an té dar dual a thuigbheáil agus ní thráfaidh an tobar go deo na ndeor."
