My wife and I are looking for an appropriate Irish name for our newborn. My family is from Drunnagh, Kilmeena, Co. Mayo. We like the name "Drunnagh" but no one in my family (either here in the states or back in Mayo) has any idea what "Drunnagh" means. Can anyone help? Is it a place name, a proper name, a general name? What does it mean? We would be grateful for any assistance that anyone can provide.

Thank You

I'm surprised that the folks back home in Mayo don't seem to know the meaning of the name.

Very often these names have an historical context- named after a stream or a tree or some local feature.

So sorry I've no idea and I must guess that if the people that live there do not know -it's unlikely that people removed from the area will be able to come up with a suitable answer.

sorry

Dear Pól

Thank you for your feedback. Fortunately, one of the better parts of not knowing is that there is always something to search for. Do you or anyone else know of historical societies in Mayo or around Westport which may be able to lend some assistance? Thank you for your consideration and assistance.

Hi,

Place a message on the 'Nostalgia Forum' at http://www.castlebar.ie and maybe someone from the locality might know.
