Irish children learn in school, although from what I've been able to pick up on here, not many people use the language, thus, many who once knew it no longer know it.
Some of the rest of us hanging around here, developed our interest for a myriad of reasons and have endeavored to obtain books and tapes and are blundering through self teaching. Others, are just blessed with the ability! Tá mé ag foghlaim i gcónaí. With translations, it is best to wait for someone more adept than I to confirm.

Yeah, Deb is right. In the South of Ireland, they seem to be taught the language from about 5 years old. In Northern Ireland ( the six counties) we were only taught the language when we went to secondary school (High school). I personally didn't enjoy learning Irish until I went to the Donegal Gaeltacht when I was about 14 and really began to see it used as a living language.
I'm always in awe of you people far away who want to learn this tricky language. Keep up the good work! Jogah, Where are you located? It would help to know so that we could direct you to places where you can learn. |
