Irish Translation Forum

Hello everyone. I have been reading through this forum for the past couple days and let me tell you, you guys are awesome. I was hoping you guys could help me out. I'm thinking about getting a tattoo of a Celtic cross, and I would like to have something written in Gaelic going around in the Halo. I will be going into law enforcement once I obtain my bachelors, so I want to have the saying be fitting. Here are some things I have been thinking about (any you could help with would be great, I understand some probably just won't translate well, or might come out as long and complex)

1. The Fallen are Never Forgotten
2. We will never forget/we will always remember
3. To Protect and Serve
4. Honor lives forever
5. Have faith right makes might, or just Right Makes Might
6. Justice never surrenders

I know I'm asking for a lot, so just whatever you can help with is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I like "Honor Lives Forever" but I think it needs to be changed up a bit to "Honor Remains Forever" in order to translate well.

I believe that translation would be: ina onóir go deo But WAIT for more input!

It does look good! But, just be sure to wait a bit for others to look over the translation. I will openly confess that I don't get it right the first try on many occasions...but the only way to learn is to try...

I have to say I'm not entirely sure about 'ina onóir go deo' - it sort of literally means 'it is honour forever'.

To translate the idea into irish you need to rephrase it to something like 'Honour is eternal'

Tá an onóir síoraí


The rest of your phrases probably would have to be rephraesd as well, if I can think of some way to tweak them I'll let you know.

Thanks Ailill, now I have more hard decisions to make that I have more choices, but that is a good thing! Yes, I am very enthusiastic about my Irish roots (I'm a mutt like most Americans, but my Irish heritage is where most of my pride falls). I love to play celtic music on my guitar; "Down by the Glenside" is one of my favorites to play. Thanks again for all the help guys, you really are incredible.
