I must say that is generalizing there as we Americans are not all alike! Ababúna! Does that not make you as bad to generalize? |

I'm American and I have to say that the reason the world views us as it does is entirely ours and our leaders faults. Anyone who thinks otherwise should take a long, hard look at how we act at times. I'm proud to be an American to be sure, and all Americans are not alike, but take a look at a history book and you'll see what Imean. |

I didn't generalise to every American, I pointed out what I view to be one of the "values" or beliefs that American society holds, as a whole: the right to speak "with" or "at" anyone in English. The point I am about to make however, can also be used about Irish society. When Americans visit, say, France, I have seen them persist in conversing in English with or at the people serving them. Be it in restaurants or shops. In a mirror of that situation, if a French person went to a shop in America, and started telling the shopkeeper this or that in French, I don't think the Americans would put up with it. Therefore, in that respect, you don't have a right to push your language whereever you go. That is why I took it a bit sorely that you stated that you'd continue to post in whatever language, "period". At the same time, the interface of this site is in English, and much of the forum banter is in English. I'm not going to tell you that you can't speak English here, because that is not why this site exists. Eoin |

Well said. I've been places and overheard someone speaking to someone else in, say, Spanish. Some people are not bothered, but I've heard people say, 'Learn the language or go home!!' Working with the public can get a bit frustrating, especially when you have to deal with someone who has an emergency, and doesn't speak English very well. They automatically revert to their first language and that can make things difficult, but what are ya' gonna do? I've even told people to 'point to where it hurts'. |

I have worked hard to learn Irish, and I do take pride in what I have accomplished. So I have absolutely no shame in saying: Oró! Féach orm! Tá mé ag iarraidh an Ghaeilge a úsáid le gach teachtaireacht.
