If your interested, read the information about the plea to save the Viking archeological site outside of Waterford City at

www.vikingwaterford.com

There's also a petition you can sign online if you agree to what they are after. It's not very popular to the locals because they need the new bypass to relieve the evergrowing heavy traffic on the present Cork Road.

The importance of this cannot be understated. It is claimed that the landing place of the first Vikings to come to Ireland is near here. This may be the first permanent settlement of Vikings in the country. Only proper archeological study can determine this and by building the new Cork Road bypass, this chance would be lost.

Thanks for reading.

I believe in saving all historical sites. We need roads, but to see where you're going, you first have to see where you've been, right? Hell, they're even re thinking the whole Stonehenge thing. Getting rid of parking lots and roads and building a visitor center that is almost 2 miles away. The main road will become a tunnel so as not to destroy the site any further. Maybe they can do something like that. I live right outside Gettysburg, PA and they're always trying to build houses or parking lots or some other such nonsense. We have to fight for history!!

I'm with you there.

Right now, they have a little over 1000 signatures on line. More are on paper. It's pitifully few so I hope everyone here at least takes a look at it. I mean, there is the possibility of rerouting the road but, of course, planners don't want to take any more time or spend any more money.

Wow, they really want to build roads through they're historical sites don't they. ONly a month or so ago I signed a petition to stop the Irish Government from putting a road through the area of Tara. I know traffic is a hassle, I've lived in the San Francisco bay area my whole life, but it's not worth destroying thousands of years cultural heritage over.

I'm not really positive if this is correct, please wait for more comments.

So, I hope some folks here at least check out the page. I mean, my opinion is that if we are interested in preserving the language, we would also be interested in preserving the heritage.
