Just saw it used by other people as "cool !". "Tá an saol mór lán den fhilíocht ag an té dar dual a thuigbheáil agus ní thráfaidh an tobar go deo na ndeor."

Yeah!! I was wondering about it!!! Would "fionnfhuar" be pronounced something like: FEUNN-fuar? I'm a beginner, so don't rely upon ANYTHING I might translate without a second or third opinion.

"FH" is usually silent, so I'd guess "FyUN-oo-ar" Redwolf ...agus déanfaidh mé do mholadh ar an gcruit a Dhia, a Dhia liom! Salm 43:4

The best way to think about "fh" is the way that sounds are produced in Irish. Unlike the English "f", a voiceless sound formed by placing the teeth against the lip (voiceless labiodental fricative), the Irish "f" is bilabial (uses the lips) to make the sound and almost sounds like simply blowing air. When lenited (adding the "h") sounds are softened. When you soften a breath of air, nothing comes out; thus, "fh" is silent. That may be a tad bit confusing, but it just means that "fh" is silent because of the impossibility of sound. For further information on where I got those weird words (i.e. voiceless labiodental fricative), see here. |
