What significance does this saying have?:

Go n-ithe an cat thú is go n-ithe an diabhal an cat = May the cat eat you and the devil eat the cat

Is it to be taken very offensively? When is it used, and why?

I wonder these thing, because I see this saying in alot of books and sources. Thanks for the help, its of course, not urgent. :D

You know, that poor old cat sure takes a beating, doesn't he? First he's the medium for our consumption by the devil. Then you open Noel McGonagle's "Irish Grammar" and see such examples as "Bhuail an fear an cat inné."

Poor kitty!

In alot of religions, being eaten is the worst thing that can happen to you after death. Being eaten by the cat, which is considered a familiar to the Devil, and therefore evil is bad, then having said cat consumed by 'ol Scratch himself is even worse. Bhuddhism, I believe, has sinners being dunked into burning human excrement and being consumed by huge flesh eating worms. Cool, huh?? :lach:
