Dear All and Sundry,

I know it's a bit early to be thinking about Christmas but does anyone have lyrics (and perhaps music) to any traditional Irish Christmas carols sung in the Irish language? The ones I have were translated from the English and I was hoping some of you out there would be able to refresh my memory with the ones I grew up with but can no longer write down.

This is a genuine request as I am to present one of them to a group of critical listeners next week *gulp*

I can send you a box of TimTams in return......

Is mise le meas,
Londubh

Someone posted a link a while back to Christmas carols in Irish, but I think they were the same old traditional carols.

Anseo 'na luí sa mhainséirín
I gcró chúng an asailín
Gean is grá ó Bheithlín
Cuir síocháin i gcroí gach éinne

Na haingle insna Flaithis thuas
Na haoirí a' triall ó shliabh anuas
A' neosadh dúinn gur rugadh Críost
'Tabhairt féirin uainn go léir dhuit

Dia do bheatha a Naí anocht
A rugadh ins a' stábla bocht
Go ciúin gan caoi ad' luascadh a luí
Tá do mháithrín le do thaobhsa

Oíche Chiúin

Oíche chiúin, oíche Mhic Dé,
Cách 'na suan, dís araon,
Dís is dílse 'faire le spéis,
Naíon beag gnaoigheal ceananntais caomh,
Críost 'na chodladh go séimh,

Oíche chiúin, oíche Mhic Dé,
Aoirí ar dtus chuala 'n scéal;
Allelúia aingeal ag glaoch,
Cantain suairc i ngar is i gcéin,
Críost an Slánaitheoir féin,

I have some other Christmas stuff, too, if anyone is interested.
Beidh ár lá linn.......go luath!!

I'm a beginner. Wait for more input with my translations.

I should come in here more often!

I cannot thank you enough for the kind posting of songs. I've managed to get a few down in time for tonight's presentation and I'm just rapt.

Shall I let you know how it goes? The choir I'm singing with doesn't want to do Irish - it would appear they're afraid of it. Perhaps this is my chance to give the language a "plug". I'm so excited.....

Fingers crossed I don't break something. Haha!!

Is mise le meas,
~L~
