Wasn't the original name of the group "Pogue Mahone" as well? I seem to remember that...then they changed it because DJs in Ireland didn't want to (or perhaps couldn't) say "póg mo thóin" aloud on the radio. That's what I read somewhere, anyway.
Whatever the case, I'd say the album title is definitely responsible for that particular common misspelling.
