Heh, I might be going soon myself, my Mum has been complaining of having the urge to pick up and go there of late. Now all I have to do is persuade her that the trip could be relatively cheap if it is budgeted correctly; she keeps thinking that such a trip would send us to the poorhouse
The flights will run you about $850 normally, but last time round I met a woman from Seattle that nabbed a great fare on a 50% sale for only $450!! Hostels are for the most part very nice and ideal for families...some even have family rooms for very nice prices, mostly en-suite. There are all kinds of family discounts (2 parents 2 children is usually the rule) for the Heritage Card (to get into the museums) and also with Irish Rail: Kid + Family Tickets - Valid for one or two adults and up to four children under 16 years. A minimum of one child must travel. Available for 1 day on "off peak" days or all days for 1 month. No ID Required What can get expensive with kids are guided bus tours - they are usually long (I think a child would have flipped out on the 5 hour tour of the Burren/Cliffs of Moher) and relatively expensive if you do them all the time. I did 2 last trip - one was absolutely worth the 20 euros, one was not worth the 15 euros. I'd say per week a family of four needs 1000 to 1,200 euros (this includes a family room at a hostel, bus fares, Heritage Card, lunch out (a light toast, cornflakes & juice breakfast comes with most hostels) and some spending money for postcards and food shopping for the make-your-own dinner).
