I found this word a while back. I would like not the translation but the pronunciation. I found it in the MacBain's dictionary online. I thought it would make a good name for my daughter-to-be and would like to know how to say it properly. Could anyone help me out?

The word is:

brinneal - a beautiful young maid or a matron

I don't think it's Irish. Isn't McBain's a Scottish dictionary?

According to McBain's, it's Middle Irish, so we wouldn't necessarily know it. My guess at pronunciation would be BRIN-yull.

I'd pronounce it BRINN-ill, with the second syllable very short and unstressed.

Do keep the "y" sound, in my opinion. The "nn" in this context is a bit like the Spanish "ñ".

In a sense, we're all of us right. It's a very faint "y" sound, hard to descibe in ASCII.
