it is a variant of MÁIRÍN which is a pet form of Mary

Not really. That's based on a mistranslation of the name "Jennifer"...they offer it for people who really have their heart set on that mistranslation. I've taught an Áine and she pronounced it as Oinya. I really like that name, by the way. "Dúid" Breatnach an tí. Is Breatnach deas mé.
