I planned to teach high school history, but I was so horrified by what I saw in the schools they placed me in for ed classes that I wanted nothing to do with that. I figured it would be safer and more rewarding all around to get a Ph. D. and teach at the college level.

I teach Welsh at university level now, part time. It's easier on one level but I miss secondary school teaching.

I used to teach music appreciation at the elementary level, but the combination of kids who really weren't interested in anything they didn't absolutely "have" to do and parents who resented their kids having to actually study for a music course, coupled with a system that didn't really allow for disciplining unruly students burned me out after just a couple of years.

Elementary? Is that primary? Last academic year I went into my son's primary school to teach, voluntarily, German, Italian and - wait for it - Irish! The kids loved it and the staff joined in too.

Yep...same thing. We tend to use "elementary" here, but you'll hear "primary" too.

I have never encountered this concept before! This is superb! It should be applied forthwith & holus bolus to all Gaelic-English literary traffic. So many Gaels seem to spend their time translating OUT of their language for publication into English (I guess the money & kudos are that direction). It's like treating Gaelic as a stricken vessel fit only for salvage, then proceeding to hoist its cargo onto the massive HMS Worldconqueror. Let's have a 5-year moratorium where our Gaelic-speaking scriveners are only allowed to travel the other direction. Let's plug the holes and man the pumps! This ship is not sunken yet!
