When I lived in the States, we often used to say "thanks a bunch". But it was generally used sarcastically, IIRC.
That's the way they took it at the conference. I nearly caused an arguement.
I can't imagine why they would take it as sarcastic. It wouldn't be considered so here unless delivered in a clearly sarcastic tone of voice or in a situation where thanks wouldn't normally be appropriate:
"That dress makes you look fat!" "Gee, thanks a bunch!" (sarcastic, obviously. Actually, any form of "thanks" would work here)
But I could say "thanks a bunch!" to a shopkeeper, for example, or to someone who gave me directions and it wouldn't be considered sarcastic at all...it's in the same category as "thanks a lot" or "thanks a million."
