I've recently taken to writing "An bhfuil Gaeilge agat?" on napkins, paper placemats, grocery lists, etc. (I haven't degenerated to bathroom walls...yet). Wouldn't it be hilarious if someday someone were to come here asking "I found this written on a placemat at El Palomar in Santa Cruz...do you know what it means?"

Níl mé anseo níos mó, a chairde. Tá IGTF caillte...tachta le fógraí. Feicfidh mé sibh ar an suíomh seo

Hey if they can have "Cops" in Irish, Sesame Street, there will be! ![]() ![]() Labhair í agus mairfaidh sí! Éire Abú! As always, wait for others' opinions on translations until a consensus has been reached. |

I am getting this horrible aural "image" of the "Cops" theme song sung in Irish...". Redwolf Níl mé anseo níos mó, a chairde. Tá IGTF caillte...tachta le fógraí. Feicfidh mé sibh ar an suíomh seo

I'm not quite that bad. When I have half a bag on, I talk to the dog in Irish. She looks at me like, 'What in THE hell are you saying'?? I try it on Karen too, and she asks, 'Are you calling me an a*****e??

An even better opportunity! My fave veg restaurant here in Santa Cruz just redid their bathrooms so all the verticle surfaces are chalk board (I guess they figured it was easier than begging people not to draw on the walls). We eat there about once a week, so I'm going to have to start collecting phrases to write as Gaeilge.
Hmmm...how WOULD you write "Kilroy was here"? "Bhí Cill Rua anseo"? Redwolf Níl mé anseo níos mó, a chairde. Tá IGTF caillte...tachta le fógraí. Feicfidh mé sibh ar an suíomh seo

That would probably be better than Bhí Kilroy anseo, although if you put that, you won't have all of those 'WHAT??' replies next to it. ![]() |

I was thinking of doing the little "Kilroy" drawing with it...that might stir their pot-fogged brains. Or maybe not...be my luck someone would say "Dude! My invisible friend wrote a message to me in our secret language! It says 'Oh wow, look at the moon!'"
This is, after all, Santa Cruz...land of fruits, nuts and vegetables, as we like to say. The fruits and vegetables are OK, but they're usually outnumbered by the nuts! Redwolf Níl mé anseo níos mó, a chairde. Tá IGTF caillte...tachta le fógraí. Feicfidh mé sibh ar an suíomh seo
