Believe it or not, it comes from an old postcard (from around 1955 or thereabouts). The original showed a fruitstand in the Central Valley and said "Greetings from California: Land of Fruits, Nuts, and Vegetables!" (I actually used to have a copy of it that I got at a shop specializing in vintage cards in San Francisco, but it got lost years ago in a move). Needless to say, although it was serious when issued, by 1969 or so, that card was guaranteed to give one the giggles. It's almost certainly developed many variations since then.

Some of you have heard of "nanaimo" bars, yes??? (it is a dessert bar with chocolate, icing sugar and condensed milk, very very sweet and quite tatsty). There is a city on Vancouver Island called Nanaimo. So the joke in BC is what is in a nanaimo bar: loggers, hookers and cocaine!
Sad, but true! Phelan
