Is there a good website for an english/irish dictionary to translatewords, not phrases? What does Sean - the name, means, I read on a website is means God's Grace and also prosperity? And also, how do you type the accents above the letters? Thanks

There are several ways to type accents. 'Alt Gr' + letter will give you a 'fada' in most programmes, I think.

Seán is the Irish for 'John' which is a Biblical name - not sure about what it means.

"John" means "God is good/gracious." "Seán" has the same meaning because it is simply an Irish pronunciation of "John."

When you speak French, the accents don't make much of a difference, they are symbols in the word (when written, not spoken) to show the loss of an S, enphasise certain syllables in words, or seperate dipthongs. And it's umlaute in German, have the courtesy (sp?) to spell things correctly in the language they are spelt then, especially if you are mocking someone in which specifically said that he (she?) didn't know how to put the accents. You, my friend, didn't say that you didn't know how to spell umlaute or that you didn't have any knowledge of the use of accents in the French language.

I am a fluent English speaker and your speel meant absolutely nothing to me. You tell a French person their accents mean nothing. Okay umlaut smarty pants. Ever heard of a typo? And mocking, god, that’s such a childish word. Can you people not accept a little criticism or is that not allowed? Perhaps, Adam my friend you are not big enough to avoid showing people the dept of your liguistic knowledge and syntax.

I was merely showing how people can't do things for themselves. Eoin has a great search feature on this site that often its not used.

Oh, you are fluent are you? Would you like me to point out every mistake you make from this point on? If so, I can do that, I am fifteen and probably am more fluent in English and its grammatical rules than near every person on this board. I said that French accents mean nothing when spoken, they are the like the English apostrophe, you don't go around saying, "CAN-apostrophe-T," or "IT-apostrophe-S," thus, the French don't say, "N-aigu+E." And it's umlaute, God damn...Even after I corrected you, you spelt it wrong...Sean in English is a name, you corrected him and put Sean back into Irish (Seán). You spelled umlat the wrong way, then corrected yourself into English, so I simply just corrected it back into German...And a little criticism? You verbally raped the thread's author about something he specifically said he didn't know how to do. G'day, sir.

Guys, c'mon! This is silly!

Éanna, the poster quite likely didn't know that the name "Seán" has a fada...when it's given to children here in the States, the fada is generally omitted (most likely because most people who name their kids "Seán" are not Irish speakers and have no idea that it could be mistaken for anything else). In any case, those of us who responded to him all spelled it "Seán," not "Séan" or "Sean," so I'm not sure what you're getting all bent out of shape about.

Yes, there's a good search engine here, but where's the harm in asking for this kind of translation, if people don't mind answering? For one thing, simple translations like this are a great way for those of us who are beginners to feel of use here. For another, not everyone is particularly computer savvy. If I'd wandered onto this site, asked a simple question like this, and then read this thread, I sure wouldn't feel welcome, and I definitely wouldn't come back with more complicated questions. If you don't want to answer them, don't. But if someone else is willing to, where's the harm?
