Listen at Barrscéalta, the woman is from Gaoth Dobhair and i speak exactly the same Irish as her (but she speaks better than me since sh'es a native speaker). And she says "ah yay-noo", and plenty of strange things that we say in Gaoth Dobhair only (for example, 4 is ceathair "kyay-hie"). And most people that are being interviewed by her are from Donegal as well, so no "ah jee-niv" there !

Gaoth Dobhair does have some peculiarities.
Terminal slender R is usually silent or barely voiced hence GEE-dough-ee (slight exageration) á can be pronounced slender eg Dhá - yea among other little quirks. As does Toraigh and Cloich an Fhaola At the risk of being contentious most teachers/academics agree that Rann na Féirste Irish is the purest in Ulster. |
