If it's Gaelic, it's spelled phonetically. Could it be "i ngrá" ("in love") with something? Altan pronounces "i ngrá" so it sounds a little like "in gray." In "Beidh Aonach Amárach" there's a line:

Is tá sí i ngrá leis an ghreasaí bróg

Where it sounds like she's singing:

"Iss teh shee in gray lay sheen (gh)risee brohg"

Something like that could be misheard as "en grace affie"

Thanks for your help! It is supposed to be a family motto that I pulled off an Irish website..... but I'm from the Irish descent of that name, not the French (there's two Grace's I guess). I will keep looking and see if I can find something from the Irish end of things.

Unless one of you could point me in the right direction?

It could still be French. Some Irish names are actually Norman in origin (Burke, Fitzgerald, etc.) , and it would make sense for a Norman to have a French motto.

They (Nap and horse) must have had some fun posing for that portrait.

:lach: Napolean was probably used to posing, but how do you suppose they got the horse to stand still that way for so long?? :lach:
