Hello!
I'm from Austria… Me and my wife have been to Scotland the last 2 weeks where I bought a highland outfit, including a belt and a buckle. Now I want to have a (kind of) Gaelic translation of my name engraved on the buckle: Christoph Hartmann. I’ve already found “Christopher” – “Críostóir” .The name “Hartmann” has two meanings – “hard “ or “strong” “man” AND in (the South of Germany) “man living in or beside the wood”. My wife says that both of them apply to me…
Is there any kind soul out there who would be so nice to translate the name for me?
Go raibh míle maith agat! Christoph(er)

Names don't translate. There is no Irish form for Hartmann since it is not of Irish origin. Irish surnames are patrynomic - derived from an ancestor. Christopher has one since it is in common usage.

Okay... thanks! But how do you say "hard man" or "man living in the wood" or "man living beside the wood" in Gaelic? Of course I'm aware that it is not a real translation of the name... but it would be very nice to have at least a kind of my family name on my buckle.
Thanks!
