Hello! Could you please provide me with the proper spelling for a word given to me while traveling in Ireland? A gentleman said there was a Gaelic word for "sweet sorrow" that was something like "agnusch" or "ag nush.". Thank you so much!

What is "sweet sorrow" anyhow? The only time I've heard it is in Shakepeare's Romeo and Juliet. And old Willy made words up off the top of his head alllllllll the time.

Gosh. The gentleman offered the word when I mentioned that sometimes when I hear music like "Amazing Grace" played on bagpipes it makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. I didn't get the sense he was "making up a word." My request for translation was genuine. I'm sorry to have offended your intellect.

I was joking about Shakespeare. He has added a lot of words to the English language. I wish I could think what that Irish word might be.

It's possible that he said éagmais, which has several meanings, including a sense of longing or absence. The pronunciation of éagmais would be roughly "AY-ug-mish", with the "AY" as in "day" and the middle syllable being extremely brief - almost not there.
