I agree as well. I went with "páistí" as kind of a generic approach (I don't think I'd ever go with "leanaí," as it really does seem to imply young children), but thinking about it, "clann" is perfect.

Tattoo artists are, I'm sure, lovely people, and they do beautiful work, but they're not your best source for translations!
