Not to sure what you mean? Ard- ilchruthóir means the best ochanger of many shapes (literall) i.e the best shapeshifter.

What I mean is what about someone who is just an average shapeshifter? What can I use for that?

Alright, ok you could use:

gnáth-ilcruthóir, or gnách-ilcruthóir for a shaprshifter of average ability.
and

bonn-ilchruthóir for one who is not so skilled at it and maybe starting off.

You could also say:
Ilcruthóir uasalach or uachtarach for ard-ilchruthóir
Ilcruthóir mheánach for gnáth-ilchruthóir
and Ilcruthóir íochtarach for a bonn-ilchruthóir

I think he just wants plain 'ol "shapeshifter," without any indication that this particular shapeshifter is better or worse than anyone else.

I know it may be a stretch, but if there is a translation, even if the phrasing/words are slightly different.

And also, what about this, but in English, how someone Irish would say it...
