"Florence" is a strange name alright although still quite common in Cork for men. It goes back hundreds of years. I don't know how it originated. Everywhere else on the planet it's a girl's name. I suspect it may be dying out as a man's name now.
Warning: Reasonable command of Irish - but I still make basic errors.

A lt of names used for girls now started as men's names; Shirley, Leslie, Beryl, Ashley, Florence, etc. And the more modern changeover Sidney. The Great Zeigfeld of Follies fame was Florenz so it was not just an Irish usage. The Florences I knew were O'Connors from Kerry

My dog is quite handy at metalwork - I gave him a kick in the arse the other day and he made a bolt for the door.
The money-grabbing wankers who control this site can ban me too. Talk about recruiting trolls! I've spent enough time putting money in their pockets.

Once a name is used for a girl, it will never again be acceptable to parents for their boys. That's the sad truth of so-called "unisex" names. Redwolf |
