You've got them backwards:

Máire Uí Chearbhaill = The wife of Ó Cearbhaill

Máire Ní Chearbhaill = The daughter/female descendant of Cearbhaill.

"Uí Chearbhaill" is the genitive of "Ó Cearbhaill," and is short for "Bean Uí Chearbhaill": "Ó Cearbhaill's Woman," in other words.

The "Ní" in "Ní Chearbhaill" is a shortened form of "Iníon."

Tá siad trína chéile agat.

1] Máire Uí Chearbhaill = The wife of Ó Cearbhaill

2] Máire Ní Chearbhaill = The daughter of Ó Cearbhaill

Is giorrúchán "iníon" (nó "iníne" ?) é "Ní"; is tuiseal ginideach "Ó" é "Uí" (sílim ;D )

A Cairde,

Go raibh míle maith agaibh faoin freagrai go dti mo deireadh ceist. Forgive me for being a doubting Thomas but the following is an extract from
www.medievalscotland.org, Names found in Angelicized Irish Documents, and it seems to suggest that Uí is the daughter of Ó Cearbhaill. What do we think?

[Feminine Given Name] [Family Name]
Rose O'Scalle 1549
Mora Enekarwell [*] 1541
* Note: in this entry, Ene- represents the sound of the Gaelic inghean Uí in the Gaelic form of her byname: inghean Uí Chearbhaill - indicating that she's a daughter of the Ó Cearbhaill family.

I read that as she is the daughter of the family Uí Cearbhaill. (Plural of Ó Cearbhaill also)
She is still titled Ní Chearbhaill..daughter of Cearbhaill...

inghean Uí Chearbhaill = iníon Uí Chearbhaill = Ní Chearbhaill
