I think that that "bureau" is a piece of furniture like a desk, kenailan.

I take it, tom, that this is also not a government department, but rather a private business. Would that be correct?

Something in Irish with alliteration that may or may not work (oops  ):

Oifig Oibre Oiriúnaigh literally "Office of Suitable Work"

Await correction or confirmation ...

In the U.S., The Better Business Bureau is an association of businesses. Those that choose to belong are held to a certain standard of doing business by their peers (the BBB will investigate if a member business is accused of wrongdoing by a customer), and thus are regarded as more trustworthy by the public.

Interesting. The blue bit didn't show up in your post initially, BB, only when I hit "quote". Weird.

De Bhaldraithe had three words down for "bureau": I. Furn. Biúró 2. (a) Oifig (Information bureau) (b) Roinn (rialtais). Apparently the meaning of biúró has expanded from just a piece of furniture, at least in some contexts.

Australia has an official government body to do this called the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission. Ireland's equivalent to this is the National Consumer Agency an Ghníomhaireacht Náisiúnta do Thomhaltóirí.

The American BBB is not a government department. It is a non-profit organization. Note that it is .org, not .gov.

Since it appears to be non-government office (bureau is just French for "office" (oh and "desk", I think)), I'd still recommend Oifig.

(There's a reference to the Better Business Bureau of Ireland on the net, but the official site http://www.bbb.ie/, sends back an error message. Is that your site, tom?)

(Another throw-away version: Gníomhaireacht Ghnó Ghairmiúla "Agency of Professional Business" looking for a better word starting with a g ...)
