I am very new to this. But, I would like to ask is the translation
Bodb Stoirman pronounced Bove Shteirman?
Correct for a male name STORMCROW? Not sure the rules on compound words.
Thanks in advance

That definitely does NOT mean "stormcrow." Not sure where you got it, but it doesn't look like Irish at all. Redwolf |

From what I read, Bodb Is masculine for Badb which means crow I believe? A Goddess name? and Stoirm means storm. I looked them up in Old Irish Gaelic dictionaries. I thought you added -an to nouns to make them a name.
Sorry as mentioned I am very new. |

Perusing my FGB, I noted that badhbh, which has the primary meaning of "war goddess" (and means "witch" or "old hag" in Scottish Gaelic) has a secondary (possibly old) meaning of "carrion crow". In the old writing system, that would have been written badb, with a dot over the "d" and the second "b". In modern Irish, the letter "h" goes after the consonant instead in those cases.
In modern Irish, what you asked for would be: préachán stoirmeach stormy crow but I suppose you could have: badhbh stoirmeach stormy crow I'm still a learner, so be sure to get input from others, especially for tattoos.

You can use this link to get to a site where you can type in Irish words or phrases and hear them pronounced. It favors the Ulster dialect (Irish has several dialects), though, and that will affect the pronunciation of the first word (but not the second one):
http://www.abair.tcd.ie/?page=synthesis&lang=eng There are some folks on here who have good pronunciation and sometimes do sound files for people, so check again later (they are asleep in Ireland by now). For now, here's a very rough guide: badhbh "BUY-uv" or or "BUY-uh" or "BEE-oo" [with the second syllable being brief - almost not there - in each case] stoirmeach "STORM-ukh" ["kh" is guttural, like the "ch" in Loch Ness] I'm still a learner, so be sure to get input from others, especially for tattoos.

I'm not sure I'd use "badhbh" as a MASCULINE name.

Red has a point, given that its various meanings in both of those forms of Gaelic (Irish and Scottish) mostly point to female creatures. It's also grammatically feminine, although that need not be decisive. I'm still a learner, so be sure to get input from others, especially for tattoos.
