Hi, I am teaching myself Irish, and am just starting to read An Trial by Máiread Ní Ghráda. There's a sentence in Radharc a haon "An príosúnach a bheidh os bhur gcomhair tá coir uafásach á cur ina leith" I don't understand "á cur ina leith" Can anyone give me a clue, go raibh míle maith agat, Seosamh

It is a bit of a tricky one in some ways. For instance, i leith is under leath in the dictionary (but also under coir in Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla).rud a chur i leith duine "to attribute something to someone, to impute something to someone, to charge someone with something" tá coir uafásach á cur ina leith "he/she has been charged with/accused of a terrible crime" literally "a terrible crime is being imputed to him/her" Irish Learners' Forum (http://irishlearner.awyr.com/) A place to learn Irish together and get accurate human translations, including translations for tattoos. |

Go raibh míle maith agat a Bhreandán. Tuigim anois... bhfuel nearly. B'fhéidir tá an leabhar seo ró deacair dom, ach tá mé ag radharc cúig anois, agus ta ceist eile agam faoi radharc ceathair. Dúirt sí an mháthair "ní ormsa is cóir aon phioc den mhilleán a chur" I understand this as "not is on me any share at all of the blame to be put" nó bealach eile " it's not my fault at all" ach feicim it could mean rud eile, slán |

I think you've basically got the gist of it.
cóir here means "just, fair, right" ní ormsa is cóir aon phioc den mhilleán a chur "It isn't right to put any of the blame on me" literally "it is not on me (emph.) that it is right to put a jot of the blame." cóir can also mean "should" So it could also be translated "none of the blame should be put on me". Hope this helps. Others may have more insight ...
