Sráid na Cathrach (Gaelic) = Village of the Stone Fort
Although lying inland the modern town takes its English name from neighbouring Mal Bay, said to link this part of the coast with Mal, the witch or fairy woman who persued Cúchulain at Loop Head (old Irish folklore). Drowned in an attempt to emulate the hero's long-jumping prowess, her body was washed ashore at Malbay.
Miltown Malbay is an example of the early Victorian seaside resorts although being located some distance from the sea. It was also an early effort in town planning - branching from a central main point.
Every July the delightful Willie Clancy music school is held there. Musicians come from around the globe to learn to play Irish traditional music. Each night during the school, a concert is held, and in the last night the main concert is held.
