This town is situated near the Shannon Estuary. It has a population of about 3000, which was once 10,000 before the Great Famine c. 1845-1847. Many people left for America, Britain and Australia during and after the Famine.
The earliest recorded history of a settlement here is a monastic settlement on Scattery Island (2 miles offshore). It's about 1200 years old. It was built by monks as refuge from the Viking raids.
