Kilfenora

A small village mainly significant up to recent times as the ecclesiastical capital of a small diocese now administered by the Bishop of Galway or, in the Church of Ireland context, Limerick.

Cathedral: Kilfenora became a diocese in 12th century and its first bishop was St. Fachtna. His church, now partly roofless and unused, became the cathedral. Only the nave is now in use, having been incorporated in the Protestant church. The three-light east window of the unroofed chancel (c. 1200) is worth notice. A tomb effigy occupies the wall on either side of the window, that of a bishop on the left-hand side. The other has been described as "grotesque".
